Action-Adventure Game: An action-adventure game is a video game that combines elements of the adventure genre with various action game elements
Boss (boss monster): A boss is an enemy character found at the end of most game levels. A boss typically is several times more powerful and has several health bars or one large health bar.
Bug: an error in a game usually used as a negative.
Button Masher: Button mashers are games focusing on combos for attacking. Common examples are fighters, or some action-adventure. Button Mashers often have combos that are very powerful, but so hard to achieve that the player simply hits buttons at random and hopes for the best. It also refers to a type of player.
Cheatery: Cheatery is a term used commonly in the description of combo attacks the character Link(Legend of Zelda) has which defy even game laws and cause tempers to boil.
Combo: A combo is two or more actions preformed for damage or for points. The higher the combo the more points gained.
Co-op: Cooperative play is a type of multiplayer that has at least two players going through story mode together. The two players work together to win.
Cover Mode: Cover mode is in game such as Rainbow Six Vegas 2. This involves the character taking cover behind an object. Other games include Gears of War and Call of Duty 4.
Cover Mechanism: Cover Mechanism is how a character or AI take cover by the design of the game.
Damage Multiplier: A damage multiplier enhances the damage done to an enemy or taken by an enemy. This is often an item that can be used with a weapon, or a spell depending on the genre.
Developer: the developer of a game is the Studio or company that creates the content and the game itself.
DPS (damage per second): dps relates to RPGs and MMORPGs. Damage Per second is how much damage an item, spell, or attack does every second as long as it is in effect.
Fatal Bug/Error: A fatal bug or error causes some kind of damage to the game or the system playing it. This could be anything from memory being wiped from the game saves or corrupting the whole computer.
Fighting Game: Fighting Games are basic punch kick and dodge tactics. These games are commonly Button mashers. Examples include Mortal Kombat, Virtual Fighter, King of fighters, and Soul Calibur.
FPS: (First Person Shooter) Games featuring a view from the character’s eyes. Commonly fast paced action with a simple story, these games are often on the Xbox 360 or PS3. Examples include Call of Duty, Half life, and Halo
Game Cartridge: This format of game data storage was common with the Nintendo for several platforms. The N64 was the last console to use this. The Game Boy variations still use small cartridges however.
Game Console: Media device used to run Data holding items such as a cartridge, disc, or memory card. These are also referred to as game machines. Examples include the Microsoft Xbox, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 64, Playstation 3(PS3), Playstation 2(PS2), etc
Game Environment: Game environments can range from being open jungles to closed quarters hall ways. Depending on the game’s time and mood the environment can be beautiful or gloomy.
Gameplay: Gameplay is the way a game plays through.
Gamertag: A gamertag is the ID or username an Xbox Live user chooses once they create and account. This tag has a common use to the Nintendo Wii’s digit code.
God Mode: God mode is the stage which the player can not be killed or does not take damage. This may also include having unlimited ammo for a weapon or unlimited energy for magic spells.
Headshot: Headshot is when the player is killed by a single shot to the forehead. Halo 3 often refers it to a snipe.
Healer: A healer is a character whose purpose is to heal the group or perform the act of healing for someone.
Health: health is the amount of life your character has. Often used as a bar or some type of icon like in Gears of War.
HUD (Heads Up Display): The Heads up display is a term for future based FPS games that refers to the helmet visor a face is seeing through.
Inverted controls: Invert is changing up and down controls and making the command the opposite of your action toward the motion stick. Up is down and vice versa.
Leeroy Jenkins: is an Internet phenomenon named for a character created by player Ben Schultz in Blizzard Entertainment's popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft.
Loot: Loot refers to the items that a character pick up after killing a monster or opening a chest.
MLG: Major League Gaming is one of North America's first professional video game leagues. MLG operates a multi-city live pro circuit, held in major venues across North America
NPC: Non-Player Character is a character in a game that is traditionally controlled by a bot (Artificial Intelligence). Some online games will have an NPC played by a person.
Platformer: Platformer games are games such as Mario and the classic Metroid. The main tactic is to jump your way to the next level. Be it jump to get higher up onto platforms or across pits.
Publisher: A video Game Publisher is a company that publishes video games that they have either developed internally or have had developed by a video game developer. As with book publishers or publishers of DVD movies, video game publishers are responsible for their product's manufacturing and marketing, including market research and all aspects of advertising.
Puzzle Game: Puzzle video games are a genre of video games that emphasize puzzle solving. The types of puzzles can test many problem solving skills including logic, strategy, pattern recognition, sequence solving, and word completion.
RPG: (Role Playing Game) RPG's are games where the player chooses or creates a character and builds the character as he/she moves in the story. Choices affect the ending of the story as well as the character's development. Examples are Elder Scrolls series, Final Fantasy, Diablo, and Kingdom Hearts.
RROD (3 red rings/ Red Ring Of Death): The red ring of death is a hardware malfunction that a high percentage of Xbox360’s have faced during early production into recent months. The problem lies in several variables one being the cooling system.
RTS: (Real Time Strategy) RTS's are not turn based and are instead a bird's eye view of the game. Popular RTS's have a civilization of sorts setup and then you send out armies to conquer/defend. Progress in the game is by the territory you own, Currency you own, and the strength of your army. Examples include Starcraft, Command and Conquer, and Kingdom Under Fire.
Sandbox Game: In a game with a sandbox mode, a player may turn off or ignore game objectives. This term is used to describe a mode or option in otherwise goal oriented games, and should be distinguished from open-ended games
Side Scroller: A side-scrolling game or side-scroller is a video game in which the gameplay action is viewed from a side-view camera angle, and the onscreen characters generally move from the left side of the screen to the right in order to reach their goals.
Sim (simulation game): A simulation game is a game that contains a mixture of skill, chance, and strategy to simulate an aspect of reality, such as a stock exchange.
stealth game: These games put the object of the game into sneaking around instead of fighting everything you see. Examples include The Metal Gear Solid series.
Superjump: The superjump is a glitch in Halo 2. One can use the physics in halo to cause a player to fall and then go up like a jump. The jump often sends the person high into the air and if directed correctly, the player can remain on a high perch or part of a building, giving him/her an advantage of seeing most of the map. Super jumpers usually use snipers as their choice weapon when performing this glitch.
Tank/heavy: The Tank is a character, often a warrior that takes loads of damage and dishes it out in large piles as well. The term tank is an RPG mainly slang term.
Teabagging: Teabagging is the action of pressing the crouch command and continually crouching over an enemy or Ally’s corpse. This performs an up and down movement much like the real world act called a teabag. This action is common in FPS’s.
Xbox Live: Xbox Live is Microsoft’s Online service for online interaction between Xbox(Original) and Xbox 360 users. This service allows media downloads as well as the original interaction of playing games while sitting(or standing) in different locations.
